Scott Martin has spurned hometown Valparaiso once again for a bigger, higher-profile school. The Valparaiso High School grad and Purdue transfer has chosen Notre Dame. He called coach Mike Brey Tuesday night with the news.

"He was excited," Martin said. "I think it made his day -- I hope it did."

On the surface, it seems like a lateral move -- another big school, another tough lineup to crack. But Martin was ebullient when describing his visit and how much he liked Brey and his staff. But the biggest factor, Martin said, was Brey's style of play -- the uptempo, high-scoring style rather than the bruising slower pace of the Big Ten.

Martin said he was about to call Homer Drew and tell him his decision.

"It was a tough decision," Martin said. "(Valparaiso) was right behind Notre Dame. I just feel this is a better fit."
